Local-first by design

Your fasting data stays yours.

Burn Index stores your profile, active fast, and fasting history on your Android device. You do not need an account, and Chipboard does not operate a server that receives those records.

The short version

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy explains how Richard Athey, operating as Chipboard ("Chipboard," "we," "us," or "our"), handles information in the Burn Index: Fasting Tracker Android application (the "App") and on this privacy-policy webpage.

The App is a local-first fasting timer and educational energy-estimation tool. It does not require registration and does not transmit your profile, active fast, fasting history, or calculated energy estimates to servers operated by us.

What exists, and where

2. Information we handle

Information stored on your device

To provide the App's features, Burn Index stores the following information locally on your Android device:

  • age, weight, height, optional biological sex, and measurement and weight-unit preferences;
  • fast start times, active and completed fasts, optional fasting goals, durations, and fasting history;
  • locally calculated resting-energy, elapsed-energy, stage, and weight-energy-equivalent estimates;
  • preferences such as appearance, notifications, onboarding status, and meter configuration; and
  • advertising-consent choices stored by Google's consent tools.

Some of this information may reflect health-related characteristics or habits. We do not receive it, upload it to our own servers, link it to your identity, or provide it to Google Mobile Ads.

Information you choose to send us

If you contact us by email, we receive the information you provide, such as your email address, name, message, and attachments. We use it to respond, provide support, investigate issues, and protect the App. Please do not email sensitive health information.

Information the App does not request

The App does not request your name, email address, postal address, phone number, precise location, contacts, calendar, files, photos, camera, microphone, body sensors, or Health Connect data.

Educational, not diagnostic

3. Fasting and energy estimates

Burn Index uses the profile values stored on your device to estimate resting energy with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and derive elapsed energy from the fast's start time. It also displays approximate fasting stages and a configurable energy-equivalent meter.

These results are calculated locally. Burn Index does not measure metabolism, body fat, weight loss, glucose, insulin, glycogen, ketones, cellular activity, or any other biomarker. Estimates may differ substantially from your actual physiology and are not shared with us or the advertising SDK.

The third-party service

4. Google advertising

The App uses the Google Mobile Ads Next-Gen SDK to display one dismissible banner advertisement and Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP) to request and manage advertising consent where required. The App asks Google's consent service which privacy options apply and displays a consent message when required for your region.

According to Google's Mobile Ads data-disclosure documentation, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may automatically collect or share:

  • IP address, which may be used to estimate general location;
  • app and ad interactions, such as app launches, ad impressions, and taps;
  • diagnostic information, such as crash, performance, hang, and energy-usage data; and
  • device or account identifiers, including the Android advertising ID and app set ID where available.

Google uses this information for advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention. Depending on your consent choices, device settings, region, and eligibility, Google may serve personalized or non-personalized ads. Burn Index does not give Google your locally stored profile or fasting records.

Google and participating advertising partners handle information under their own policies. You can learn more from:

Access the App may request

5. Device permissions

Notifications

Optional notification access lets the App alert you at selected fasting stages and goals. You can turn notifications off in the App or Android settings.

Internet and network state

Network access is used for Google consent and advertising services. The fasting timer, local history, and calculations do not require a Chipboard server.

These permissions do not give the App access to your contacts, calendar, files, precise location, camera, microphone, body sensors, or Health Connect records.

Why information is used

6. How information is used and shared

Local information is used to run the timer, calculate estimates, display fasting stages, preserve active and completed fasts, restore state after the App closes, remember settings, and schedule the notifications you choose.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your locally stored profile, fasting history, settings, or estimates with other companies. Google may process and share advertising-related information as described above. Under some privacy laws, personalized advertising may be considered "sharing" or "targeted advertising" even when no money is exchanged.

We may disclose information you send directly to us if reasonably necessary to comply with law, enforce our rights, prevent fraud or harm, or respond to a valid legal request. Our email provider may process support messages on our behalf.

How long information remains

7. Retention and deletion

  • Local App data remains on your device until you clear the App's storage in Android settings or uninstall it.
  • Android backups: depending on your device and backup settings, Android may include eligible App data in a device or cloud backup. Backups are controlled by your operating-system and backup-provider settings and may remain after the App is uninstalled.
  • Google advertising data is retained according to Google's policies and your Google account and advertising settings.
  • Support emails are retained only as long as reasonably needed to respond, maintain an issue record, protect the App, or meet legal obligations.

Controls available to you

8. Your choices and privacy rights

  • Change notification and display preferences in Burn Index's Settings screen.
  • Revoke notification access in Android system settings.
  • When Google requires a privacy-options entry for your region, open Settings > Privacy & Ads > Privacy choices in the App to review or change your advertising consent.
  • Use Google My Ad Center and Android advertising controls to manage ad personalization and your advertising ID.
  • Delete local App data by clearing Burn Index's storage in Android settings or uninstalling the App. Manage device backups separately through your Android or Google backup settings.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict certain personal information, or to object to certain processing. For information held directly by us, such as a support email, contact us below. For information controlled by Google, use Google's privacy and account controls or contact Google.

Protecting information

9. Security

Keeping core records on your device limits their exposure to us. Access to those records depends on your device security, Android backups, and accounts connected to those backups. Network traffic is required to use encrypted transport, and Google states that Mobile Ads SDK data is encrypted in transit. No storage or transmission method is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Age and medical limitations

10. Children and health

Burn Index is not directed to children under 13 or under the applicable age of digital consent in their country. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent personal information to us, contact us so we can delete it.

Burn Index is not a medical device.

It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. Fasting can carry health risks and may not be appropriate for minors, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with eating-disorder histories, diabetes or other medical conditions, or people taking certain medications. Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional when appropriate.

Keeping this accurate

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the App, third-party services, or legal requirements change. We will post the revised policy at this URL and update the effective date above. Material changes may also be communicated in the App or its Google Play listing when appropriate.
